Abstract
Onycholysis is defined as the separation of the nail plate from the nail bed. When this occurs, air entering from the distal free edge gives the separated nail plate the visual image of opaque white (Figs. 1, 3, 6). Onycholysis occurs very frequently in fingernails, less so in toenails. This is a women’s disease seen only in males who have distinctive jobs relating to the water-borne environment, e.g., janitors, bartenders, fruit juice squeezers, tropical fish farmers, strawberry farmers and pickers; barbers also suffer with onycholysis as an occupational hazard.
