Abstract

The prevalence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) increases rapidly with advancing age; Figure 4.1 shows that 50% of all patients presenting with ESRD are over 55 years old. In 1970 the average age of patients starting dialysis in Europe was 35 years1 but recent reports from France and the USA have indicated a mean age of new patients of nearly 60 years2,3, with 40% older than 60 years4,5. The elderly patient with ESRD has posed an increasing challenge to nephrologists in the past five years, with a variety of moral, medical and economic issues emerging.
