Abstract
Cluster headache is one of the most painful “functional” syndromes that exists. The patient with an acute cluster headache suffers with tremendous pain, and then, following cessation of the headaches, lives in mortal fear of the next one. Indeed, more than one account has stated that patients may consider suicide during a cluster headache. Some patients have indicated they are prevented from doing harm to themselves only by the knowledge that the pain is usually self-limited 30 to 120 minutes. Cluster headache patients seek any modality that will produce relief. The therapeutic armamentarium is not large, but several effective approaches are available.
