Abstract
The responsibilities of the practitioner in the occupational health field fall into two broad categories. The first is concerned with the effect of health or rather ill health on ability to work. This involves the assessment of fitness of individuals for various occupations and advice to those individuals and their employers of the constraints involved and the best way that these may be overcome. The second category is concerned with the effect of work on individuals and groups. This field covers a wide range of problems including the treatment of acute injury at work, the effects of physical and chemical environmental conditions and the psychological stresses inherent in any organized social activity.
