Surgical Management of Peptic Ulcer

  • Chapter
Gastroenterology

Abstract

In the great majority of cases surgery, in contrast to medical therapy, provides a cure for both duodenal and gastric ulcers. Despite this, the number of operations for peptic ulcer has declined during the past decade. This reduction has undoubtedly been accelerated in recent years by cimetidine and ranitidine but other probable reasons are the falling incidence of ulcer disease and the increased acceptance by physicians and surgeons that a significant proportion of patients are dissatisfied with the result of their operation.
