Abstract

Arfken, Biedenharn and Rose1 ) have pointed out as early as 1952 that the γ — γ directional correlations on the (1–3) cascade with the intermediate transition unobserved can be used to obtain multipolarities of transitions and level spins. Until now, because of poor resolution of the Nal detectors used in γ — γ (θ) experiments, the analysis of the (1–3) correlations has been very complicated. With the recent development of Nal — Ge(Li) and Ge(Li) — Ge(Li) detector systems for γ — γ (θ) experiments, the analysis of skip correlation data has become as feasible and profitable as consecutive cascades. The correlation coefficients for a skip cascade depend also on the spins of the intermediate levels and the multipolarity of the unobserved transition as well as the spins of the upper and lower states and multipolarities of the first and third gamma rays2) (see fig. 1).
