Abstract

Antidepressant medication has been used in child psychiatry for four main disorders: depression, enuresis, attention deficit disorders (hyperactivity), and separation anxiety/school phobia. It is surprising that antidepressants are claimed to be effective in such diverse conditions as these four. Nevertheless, there are significant numbers of clinical reports suggesting their efficacy for these disorders. In order to establish the utility of antidepressant medication for children, diagnostic and nosological problems must initially be addressed. This review critically evaluates the literature concerning childhood depression and whether there is support for the role of antidepressant medication in the treatment of children with depression and other conditions.
