Abstract

In the earliest days of sail the need for lights and buoys to aid the mariner in the navigation of coastal waters and rivers was recognized. It has been established that a lighthouse was built at Sigeum, near Troy, in the seventh century B.C., and in Alexandria in Egypt in the third century B.C. Wood fires furnished their illumination; wood and sometimes coal continued to be used for this purpose until the invention of the electric light in the nineteenth century. The first lighthouse in the United States was built at Boston in 1716, and logs and empty kegs were used to mark channels in the Delaware River as early as 1767.
