Oahu OTEC Preliminary Design: Sea-Floor Surveys

Abstract

The Ocean Thermal Corporation and its subcontractors are engaged in a multiphase programme to build and operate an ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) facility off Kahe Point, Oahu. Ocean Thermal Corporation’s OTEC power plant functions as a closed-cycle heat engine. Large quantities of sun-warmed water, drawn from the surface of the ocean, are used to vaporize ammonia. As the ammonia gas expands, it drives a turbine generator to produce electricity. Cold water pumped up from the depths of the ocean then condenses the gaseous ammonia back to the liquid state. The process is termed ‘closed-cycle’ because the working fluid ammonia, is pumped continuously around the work cycle.
