Abstract

Only three cardiac transplant centres have had continuing programmes for more than 10 years—our own, Stanford Medical Center in California, and the La Pitié Hospital in Paris. More recently, 20 or so new centres have initiated programmes. Sixty-eight cardiac transplant operations were performed at the University of Cape Town on 61 patients between December 1967 and February 1984. Twelve of these transplants were orthotopic and 56 heterotopic; seven procedures were retransplants and two involved the use of xenografts. At Stanford University Medical Center, where approximately one-third of all heart transplants have been performed, 286 orthotopic and one heterotopic transplant operations were carried out between January 1968 and April 19831. At La Pitié Hospital in Paris, 67 orthotopic and one heterotopic transplants were performed between December 1972 and December 19822.
