Prophylactic efficacy of carbamazepine in lithium-resistant affective disorders

  • Chapter
Current Trends in Lithium and Rubidium Therapy

Abstract

Several clinical studies have confirmed the efficacy of lithium salts in mania and in the prevention of recurrent attacks of manic-depressive illness (1, 2, 3, 4). However, not all patients benefit from this therapy. Furthermore, due to toxic side-effects, the periodic measurement of lithium serum levels during treatment is necessary. Thus, the possibility of conceiving alternative drugs with antimanic and prophylactic effects similar to those of lithium is desirable.
