Abstract
In the early somite stage of the developing embryo, multiple coelomic spaces are formed (Figure 1). Each of these spaces is enclosed by mesoblasts which are derived from the intra-embryonic mesoderm. The mesoblasts differentiate into a single layer of mesothelium. The cavities fuse to form a single continuous coelomic cavity. As a result of invagination of organs and various fusions, the single cavity becomes separated into the pericardial, pleural and peritoneal cavities, and also the tunica vaginalis. The differentiation of mesoblasts takes place at a later stage than other mesodermal developments, such as differentiation into vascular endothelium, muscles etc.
