Abstract
Improvements in neonatal care in the past few years have resulted in fewer respiratory deaths, and neurological problems have become the limiting factor in neonatal prognosis. Both CT and ultrasound are useful for evaluating the newborn brain. The indications for brain scanning include (1) screening for brain anomalies in patients with other anomalies such as meningomyelocele and midline facial cleft defects; (2) screening for, and follow-up of, intracranial hemorrhage; (3) unexplained seizures; (4) enlarged head by measurement; (5) trauma; (6) increased intracranial pressure; (7) meningitis not responding to therapy; (8) intrauterine infections; (9) abnormal neurological examinations; (10) suspected malfunction of ventricular shunt; (11) intraoperative positioning of shunt catheter; and (12) birth asphyxia.
