Metoprolol: A Review of its Pharmacological Properties and Therapeutic Efficacy in Hypertension

Abstract

In animal studies, metoprolol has been shown to possess β-adrenoceptor blocking activity, to exert a greater effect on β1 than β2 receptors, to be devoid of partial agonist activity, and to have only weak membrane stabilising activity. The pharmacological properties of metoprolol compared with those of some other β-adrenoceptor blocking drugs are shown in table I.
