Abstract

Although all electromagnetic phenomena can be studied in empty space, an important part of any introductory course on electricity and magnetism is a proper understanding of the nature of matter. We shall therefore discuss dielectric behaviour in the chapter on electrostatics, conduction in metal wires in that on magnetostatics, and magnetism in matter (whether para-, dia- or ferromagnetism) in the chapter on magnetism. In this first chapter the nature of matter is summarised.
