Abstract

This chapter addresses more than just optics issues. Drive circuitry and integrated circuitry are also presented in terms of gallium arsenide and silicon custom VLSI technology. Common MOS structures are covered first because they have been around for several years and can possibly be upgraded. Gallium arsenide (GaAs), on the other hand, is still rather expensive. Its attributes, however, outweigh the extra cost if high switching speeds are required. An introduction to both technologies as applied to integrated optics is warranted if only because of the immaturity of each.
