Abstract

The discussion of receivers will be divided into two sections. The first is primarily dedicated to the physics of detection devices; the second, to the receiver circuitry. Although there are several types of detectors, the discussion will be limited to single-mode types, which are solid state. Most single-mode detectors are long-wavelength devices, but this section will cover short-wavelength devices instead because they are readily available and fairly cost effective. Some manufacturers make single-mode or near-single-mode sources at the shorter wavelengths (820 nm).
