Abstract

Animals communicate with each other through all their senses: touch, vision, smell, hearing and in some fishes by electric fields. In recent years the study of communication by animals has increased rapidly and some fascinating phenomena have been revealed through the development of methods for studying both the communication signals of the animals and also the capabilities of their sense organs. In addition the rapid development of techniques for human communication has stimulated interest in the methods used by animals. The parallels between human and animal communication systems are often remarkably close and many animals rival or surpass the performance of human technology.
