Abstract
This chapter describes control strategies and technologies used to reduce environmental risks from toxics. As an example of needed legislative support, the chapter includes an overview of the supporting legislative infrastructure for the us Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It also includes as background, discussion of the factors contributing to the complexity of the toxic control problem and five regulatory methods for establishing control limits. Using the strategies evolving from the EPA’S legislative infrastructure as comprehensive examples, the chapter examines important individual strategies in five functional control areas used for overall control. The chapter also describes four important types of treatment approach used and examines the advantages and disadvantages of each type. The chapter presents representative technologies within each type of treatment and considers current limitations of the treatment state- of-the-art.
