Abstract

When the action of the abductor pollicis brevis, the opponens, and the superficial head of the flexor pollicis brevis is lost, the thumb can no longer be brought into opposition, which seriously impedes the grasp function of the hand. Only cylindrical objects of limited size can still be firmly grasped. Because of the absence of opposition of the thumb, precision handling is no longer possible.
