Abstract

In contrast to many of the commonly encountered poisons, lead has a number of distinctive features. It is one of the elements which occurs naturally in the earth’s crust, and has been extracted and used by mankind for at least 5000 years. Moreover, lead poisoning is a chronic and insidious process resulting from sustained or repeated exposures, which are usually inadvertent, and in which the hazard is unknown or unsuspected.
