Abstract

The aliphatic series of hydrocarbons includes both saturated and unsaturated compounds which are derived almost exclusively from petroleum or petroleum processing. The saturated series is composed of gases (methane, ethane, propane and butane), liquids and solids. Unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons are byproducts of the petrochemical industry and are essential to the synthesis of many plastics and synthetic rubbers. Ethylene, propylene and butadiene, isoprene and acetylene all have weak anaesthetic properties at high concentrations.
