Abstract

The mortality from barbiturate poisoning in the UK has fallen in recent years. This is partly due to a change in prescribing habits as alternative hypnotic, sedative and anticonvulsant drugs have become available. Many of these drugs are considerably safer than barbiturates when taken in overdose but they are nonetheless responsible for several hundred deaths each year (see Chapter 1).
