Abstract

The years of adolescence, roughly those between twelve (the onset of puberty) and the early twenties (when the adolescent’s developmental tasks have been mostly completed), have been romanticized and maligned. There have been theorists and therapists who have devoted a great deal of time to this period of life and who have warned of its difficulties. Holmes (1964) said that the intensity of an adult’s interest in adolescence varies directly with his distance from adolescents. Josselyn (1957) described the psychotherapy of adolescents as “the most baffling, the most anxiety-arousing, and the most narcissistically gratifying experience a psychiatrist can have.”

This work was done while Dr. Jaffe was a Clinical Research Fellow in Adolescence at the Institute for Psychosomatic Research and Training, Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center (Grant #T32 MH14668-01 of the NIMH, USPHS).
