Abstract

Spermatozoa undergo degenerative changes with the passage of time during storage prior to fertilization. The effects of these changes have been reviewed by Salisbury and Hart1 and more recently by Vander Vliet and Hafez2. The ageing process or senescence, which seems to be a universal one, may occur in the male or female reproductive tracts as well as in vitro after prolonged storage at different temperatures. Although the effects of ageing vary according to the environment in which the ageing occurs, a loss of fertilizing capability seems to be common to all environments.
