Abstract

This chapter presents a combination of the extrapolation of experience in Eurotransplant with kidney transplantation and an exercise in theory. Three areas will be considered.

  1. 1.

The discrepancy between the number of patients in need of a heart transplant and the number of donors available.

  2. 2.

The possibilities of heart-organ exchange between heart transplant centres and possibilities of heart preservation.

  3. 3.

The evidence of the Dutch transplant group relating to the importance of tissue typing in experimental heart grafting.
