Abstract
The purposes of this paper are: (1) to present a brief summary of the evidence that glutamine, glutamic acid, proline-rich polypeptides from ingested cereal grain glutens play a pathogenic role in the production of schizophrenic symptoms in those hereditarily susceptible to this disorder; (2) to speculate briefly as to the possible role of the gut barrier system in relation to the psychotoxic effects, the hypothesized genetic factors in coeliac disease and schizophrenia, as well as the antigenic nature of the polypeptides. A more comprehensive summary and discussion has been published elsewhere (Dohan, 1978a).
