Abstract
The age-dependence of malignant diseases in man has intrigued many investigators and inspired various theories of carcinogenesis (Muller, 1951; Fisher and Holloman, 1951; Nordling, 1952, 1953; Stocks, 1953; Armitage and Doll, 1954, 1957, 1961; Case, 1956(a), (b); Fisher, 1958; Burch, 1965, 1968(a), (b); Burnet, 1965; Curtis, 1967, 1969; Doll, 1968, 1971; Hems, 1968(a), (b); Mayneord, 1968; Ashley, 1969(a), (b), 1970(a), (b); Cook, Doll and Fellingham, 1969; Eyring, Stover and Brown, 1971; Knudson, 1971; and Hirsch, 1974). With few exceptions, investigators have concentrated their attention on adult-onset cancers, mainly carcinomas.
