Abstract

As yet, problems of tissue recognition, like those of the control of growth itself, have no generally accepted solution. In Weiss’s theory of growth, templates combine stoichiometrically with antitemplates but the molecular basis of mutual recognition was not defined (Weiss and Kavanau, 1957). Tyler’s (1947) ‘pairs of structural units’ resemble antigen and antibody. Stereochemical complementarity is implied, but Tyler did not elaborate on the details of growth-control. Druckrey (1959) postulated a ‘higher’ regulating centre in his theory of growth-control, but he did not discuss the mechanism whereby the mitotic stimulators released from that centre recognize their target tissue.
