Abstract

The level of exercise performed by fishes, even within one species, is extremely varied. In a loch, the mean hourly swimming speed of brown trout, Salmo trutta, did not exceed 0.2 body lengths per second (bls−1) except in March when it peaked at 0.28 bls−1 (Holliday, Tytler and Young 1972/73). When migrating up river, however, sea trout (the migratory form of brown trout) swim at between 0.5 and 1bls−1 over the ground for periods of 3–4 h at a time (D. Solomon, personal communication). As water velocity may be anything from 0.3 to 1.5 ms−1, these fish are clearly exercising at high sustainable levels, even if only to maintain position in midstream. Short-duration bursts of activity may be used when negotiating rapid currents during spawning migration and when attempting to capture prey, or when attempting to escape a predator.
