Abstract
There appears to be very little coupling between the anti-symmetric and symmetric S=O stretching modes and the other vibrations of the molecule to which this group is attached. These bands therefore afford a particularly good system in which to study the impact of the electronic effects that arise from changes in the substituents. Unfortunately, the relative insolubility of many of these compounds has led to their being studied in the solid state or in solution in polar solvents, so that the overall picture is overlaid by association effects. Nevertheless, it is possible to draw some general conclusions from this material, both as regards the variations of the frequencies with structure and with angles. These are presented in more detail in Section 7.1.2, in which the systematics of these frequencies is discussed.
