Abstract
The machine tool industry is a fairly sizeable industry in the NICs. Table 5.1 indicates the value of production, trade and demand for machine tools in a number of NICs. The rank of each country in the world is also indicated. It may be noted that, although these countries have not yet reached a position where production exceeds demand, the discrepancy is not that great. It may also be noted that several of these countries are large in terms of markets and production of machine tools. For example, machine tool demand in India was the eleventh largest in the world in 1984, while Taiwanese production ranked as number fifteen in 1983.
