Effects of Retinoids on Chondrogenesis and Epidermogenesis In Vitro

Abstract

In the last few years, the mouse limb bud culture has been successfully used as a test system for studies in developmental biology and prenatal toxicology.1–5 In this highly reproducible system, which was originally developed by Kochhar6 and Aydelotte and Kochhar,7 the chondrogenesis and epidermogenesis in vitro proceed in a well-organized fashion simulating the corresponding processes of morphogenetic differentiation in vivo.8,9 In this paper we review our recent work on the effects of various retinoids on chondrogenesis and epidermogenesis in vitro, using the mouse limb bud culture as an experimental model.10–13
