Abstract

The promise of computed axial tomography in the diagnosis of intracran-ial infections predicted by Altemus and Taveras in 1974 appears well supported by numerous investigators.2–17 Early diagnosis and prompt effective treatment of CNS infections is essential to achieve lowered morbidity and mortality rates, as indicated by recent reports.4-7 Computed tomography’s revolutionary impact on the evaluation of neurologic disorders in general warrants a review of the current neuroradiologic approach to the diagnosis of CNS infection. Investigative modalities once important in diagnosis of CNS infection have either been abandoned or have assumed a secondary role since the advent of computed tomography (CT). Superior soft tissue discrimination by CT allows a more accurate assessment of the extent and location of an infective process than hitherto possible.
