Abstract
In many countries, old people are considered burdensome, obsolete, and virtually useless. This negative image, common in the majority of countries surveyed, produces apathy on the part of the elderly and those around them toward roles and supports for elders by the community. In some countries, communities themselves have lost a sense of identity and neighborliness, owing to industrialization and urbanization. The elderly tend to be misunderstood and unsupported in urban communities that hardly have a life of their own.
