Abstract
Hypothermic ischaemic storage (HIS) of kidneys after flush perfusion with special solutions is an effective and sufficient preservation technique for periods up to 24 h. It is widely used in transplant centres, and exclusively in Eurotransplant. But there is a problem: after periods of normothermic ischaemia only the administration of oxygen allows preservation with sufficient maintenance of viability. However, continuous perfusion techniques are not available in many transplant centres and for sufficient surface oxygenation of the whole kidney gas pressures of 7–10 atmospheres would be necessary.
