Abstract

Although all the epithelial tissues replace their cells and maintain their mass by means of the same mechanism, or mechanisms, with only the chalone molecules being tissue-specific, there are two other groups of tissues that show marked variations on this basic theme. These are, first, the non-mitotic muscles and the non-mitotic neurones of the central nervous system, and second, the various connective tissues (Chapter 8). Altogether these tissues form the bulk of the body mass.
