Abstract
The importance which is attached to the complaint of chest pain comes from the knowledge that 1 in 5 of all deaths in this country are from a myocardial infarction (heart attack). Yet, only a small proportion of patients presenting to the Accident and Emergency department with chest pain will have had one. Thus, this section first briefly considers the ways in which the various causes of chest pain can be distinguished from one another, and then the problem of heart attacks in more detail.
