Abstract

A possible link between HBV infection and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was reported in 1970 (Sherlock et al., 1970; Vogel et al., 1970) but the full extent of the association was established only recently as more sensitive methods of detection of several markers of HBV infection in serum became available (Maupas et al., 1975; Maupas et al., 1977; Tabor et al., 1977). This observation promoted the search for viral antigens in liver tissue to assess the oncogenic potential of HBV. In previous studies HBsAg was demonstrated in the non-cancerous part of the liver (Peters, 1975; Hadziyannis et al., 1976). Recently the antigen has not only been observed in cancerous hepatocytes in the liver (Shikata, 1976; Nazarewicz et al., 1977) but also in hepatoma metastisized in bone (Doury et al., 1977).
