Effects of Benzodiazepines on Sleep and on Performance: Studies in Healthy Man

  • Chapter
Sleep Research

Abstract

Within recent years there has been increasing interest in the differential effects of benzodiazepines, and many studies have been concerned with their effects on performance. The use of benzodiazepines, as both hypnotics and anxiolytics by those involved in skilled activity, has prompted the search for compounds with hypnotic activity without residual impairment and for anxiolytics with minimal impairment of performance. Our own studies have been concerned with the residual effects of drugs which would be useful in the management of disturbed sleep in those with irregular rest and activity, and these studies have involved several groups of benzodiazepines in an attempt to define compounds without residual effects on performance yet with useful hypnotic activity. Three groups of benzodiazepines have been studied. They were nordi-azepam and related compounds, fosazepam and potassium cloraz-epate, the 1,5-benzodiazepines, clobazam and triflubazam, and diazepam and its hydroxylated metabolites, temazepam and oxazepam.
