Abstract

In solids and liquids the molecules are very close together; the bulk material shows short range order. However, at the surface of the solid or liquid the order ends rather abruptly. The surface can be considered as a two-dimensional defect in the molecular arrangement in the sense that the environment of a molecule in the surface region is markedly different from that of a molecule in the bulk.
