Straw feeding

  • Bill Butterworth

It is as well to go back to square one to see what we are really aiming at when growing crops to feed cattle. Certainly, in a year when grass and other forage is short, straw is a necessary stand-by and any process which improves its digestibility is attractive. However, high mechanization costs cannot be borne by a system which only pays off in a bad forage year. To be attractive all the time the basic system has to be different. That fundamental difference occurs on a mixed farm.
