Abstract

There is no doubt that historical evidence shows that burning straw off does have a very significant effect on the following crop. This effect will be seen in weed population, disease and in yield. The Letcombe Laboratory has long been advocating the burn. Table 3.1 shows the results of trials at Letcombe in 1977–8 and indicates a yield depression from incorporation. It should be remembered that this was one trial in one year only with very shallow incorporation to only 7 cm.
