The growth in production of cereal straw in the UK has far outstripped an increase in the use of straw. Current surpluses are estimated at something in excess of 7 million tonnes per year. The total production is about 12.5 million tonnes leaving a fairly constant use on the farm of about 5 million tonnes. The quantity of excess production is expected to continue to rise rapidly to 10 million tonnes by 1990. Straw production is, of course, mainly in the arable areas where there is less livestock enterprise to utilize the straw in the traditional way (see Figs 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3).
