Soils with matured humus: isohumic soils and vertisols

  • Chapter
Book cover Pedology

Abstract

The soils discussed in this chapter have a special kind of development, with regard to both organic matter (maturation) and the weathering complex (formation of swelling clays), resulting from large seasonal pedoclimatic variations in humidity and an abundance of the alkaline earth cations of calcium and magnesium. This twofold development leads to the formation of a very special clay-humus complex, which is the common characteristic of two large families of soils — the isohumic soils and the vertisols. However, differences between them justify their separation into two classes.
