Abstract
The art of successful parenting has been well established by millions of individuals across the world. It appears that facilitating parenting skills are practiced by a variety of racial and ethnic groups and are not the exclusive province of the white middle class (Schachter, 1979; Werner et al, 1971; Werner, 1980). Parents are able to facilitate their children’s development so that as infants, they achieve their developmental milestones; as children they manage the social and academic demands of school; and as adults they are able to fulfill Freud’s dictum of maturity — the ability to work and love. These parents have come to learn that infants do not develop solely on their own due to the process of genetically determined maturation. These parents seem to know that infants require an environment which is responsive to their needs and a caregiver who encourages them to make developmental advances (Kearsley, 1979; Zelazo, 1979).
