Abstract

In response to the growing concern over the consequences of adolescent pregnancy, several models of programmatic intervention have moved beyond remedial levels of service delivery involving the already pregnant adolescent to those providing pregnancy prevention through adolescent reproductive health services. The need for such programs is documented not only by the annual estimate of 1,000,000 pregnant adolescents, but also by the estimate that 50 percent of the four million females aged 15 to 19 years of age are in need of family planning services because of their sexual activity (Tyrer and Josimovich, 1977).
