Abstract
Many hospitals have recognized significant clinical benefit from a nutritional support programme to assist in the metabolic management of patients unable to ingest an adequate oral diet. Such programmes have been characterized by a multidisciplinary team approach using the expertise of dietitians, pharmacists, nurses and physicians to deliver optimal care. As our ability to sustain life in the hospital improved through new methods of treatment, new surgical approaches, and aggressive nutritional support, it became apparent that the provision of home-care for the compromised but not hospital-dependent patient was necessary1–4. Experience has shown that as a hospital’s in-patient nutritional support programme expands, the need for a home nutritional programme grows. Support by industry in meeting the needs of home nutrition programmes has been enthusiastic and effective in providing ample materials.
