Abstract

Pharmacological action. This drug is an iron-free compound obtained from ferrioxamine, a metabolite of Streptomyces pilosus. It is an ironcomplexing agent capable of eliminating iron from the body. It does not remove iron from haemoglobin or iron-containing enzymes. The iron complex formed with such substances as ferritin, haemosiderin and transferrin is rapidly excreted by the kidneys. The serum iron concentration quickly decreases. The drug has almost exclusive affinity for iron.
