Abstract

A large-scale 13CO (J =1–0) survey project is now on-going with two m millimeter-wave radio telescopes of Nagoya University. The purpose of this survey is to reveal the distribution of dense molecular clouds, probable sites of star formation, along the Galactic plane and to investigate the physical conditions for star formation. This survey covers an area of l ~ 0° – 230° and b ~ –20° – 20°, corresponding to ~ 6060deg2. This includes nearby star-forming regions such as Orion, Taurus, Cepheus, Cygnus, Serpens, Ophiuchus, and Lupus. We find the 13CO distribution is highly clumpy. By using this dataset, we identified individual clouds at 3σ noise level and catalogued more than 1000 clouds having a wide mass range of ~ 101–4 M . In this contribution, we briefly describe the results, focusing on the following three aspects; (1) mass spectra of star forming molecular clouds, (2) gravitational stabilities of these clouds, and (3) their star forming activities. At the end, we give a prospect on the southern sky survey to be made with the 4 m telescope recently installed at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile.
